Heart-Melting Photos Of Animals That Are Way Too Cute
Animals have a way of bringing out the best in all of us. No matter what we've been dealing with, or how our day is going, there's something about snuggling — or even briefly seeing — an adorable animal that somehow makes everything okay.
From pets to wildlife, here are some of the most adorable critters we've found. Treat yourself to something nice — these cuties are sure to give you a little dopamine rush.
"My sister’s doggie waiting while she repairs his favorite toy."
Dogs have an incredible sense of intuition, and when something is amiss in their lives — say, for instance, their favorite toy needs mending — they'll watch and wait until the problem is fixed.
This pup seems patient enough, but is also hyper-fixated on the task at hand. After all, the sooner this human fixes their toy, the sooner they'll be able to do their favorite thing in the world and play with it once more.
"Cozy kittens in my backyard."
Part of the reason that cats are so successful as a species is that they thrive outdoors and continually breed. This means, depending on your area, you might see a lot of feral or stray cats out and about.
In situations where you can't adopt a cat but want to care for your local kitties, it's possible to create warm spaces where they can hunker down. That's exactly what this Redditor did — and it looks like their efforts are paying off.
"My girl Bella totally in love with my boyfriend of two years."
Dog owners often say that they can tell everything they need to know about a person by the way their dog reacts to them, or — vice versa — by the way that they relate to dogs in their life.
If you subscribe to this theory, you can tell that this person's boyfriend is a keeper. Sure, they've been together two years, so it's basically implied at this point — but still, it's nice to have that doggo endorsement.
"I fed this female box tortoise some raspberries at the beginning of the summer. Now, she follows me all over the garden, and visits me almost daily looking for handouts."
Even animals that aren't traditional pets, or those who don't want to be pets, have a way of knowing when a particular person is worth following around. This box tortoise seems to be a bit of a freeloader, but that's okay.
If the price of admission is a few raspberries at a time in order to see this gorgeous creature, it all seems worth it. Still, this relationship seems like it's all give and no take.
"My mom has a scarecrow on her porch for the spooky season. A neighborhood cat likes to come and cuddle up with it at night."
Cats love laps, and the reason for this preference might have to do with the contours of a person's lap, or, more likely, the warmth that a cat can soak up from said lap.
It's safe to say that this scarecrow's lap isn't warm, so it's anybody's guess why this cat has taken such a liking to this perch. Maybe it's a matter of finding any lap it can.
"My boy when asking for a treats. How could I resist that adorable smile?"
When a pet, cat or dog, has human-like features it can run the gamut from adorable to unsettling. This orange tabby has a bit of a Cheshire Cat thing going on, and I'm not sure of his motivations.
Fortunately, he seems to fall closer to the cute than the unnerving end of the spectrum, so I'll let this one slide. Hopefully he gets his treats pretty soon.
"My cat turned 19. He loves pancakes."
Pets don't live forever, but with tender loving care, good genetics, and a little luck, they can still live impressively long lives. This cat has made it to an elder status, and it looks like it's still vibrant and enthusiastic.
The secret to this long and animated life? In this cat's case, apparently the secret is pancakes. Lots of pancakes. Just look at the excitement on that little face.
"Our dog has been lying in this circle on our new rug like it's a bed."
Cats often get weird about circles, to the point that if you draw a circle or place a hoop around them, their brain might tell them that they're now confined and can't escape.
No idea if that's what's going on with this doggo, but it seems to be something similar. In any case, it's an inexpensive alternative to an actual dog bed. Just convince your dog that the surfaces in your house are already beds, draw some circles, and you're done.
"I rolled over over to kiss my girlfriend good morning, and I found this…"
For cats — particularly black cats — the margin between "sleek jungle creature" and "demented goblin" can be razor-thin. It's safe to say that this cat is more of a goblin than a panther, but that's okay.
This also speaks to the minor compromises we make for our pets' comfort. Sure, it would be nice to snuggle with our significant others — but sometimes, the resident goblin needs that mattress real estate.
"I found this kitten near a convenience store, and she follows me everywhere I go, so I've decided to bring her home. I asked the clerk if anyone owns her, and they said no one does."
While dogs are typically adopted in a well-thought-out process, cats often come into our lives through happenstance, effectively adopting their humans rather than the other way around. Here's a prime example of the phenomenon.
Whether it's kismet or just sheer chance, there's something absolutely magical about encountering a creature in need and being in a position to give it what it needs in order to thrive. This is how people who don't consider themselves cat people become cat people.
"Found a stray cat in my garage this morning."
This isn't a stray cat, of course, it's a possum. Every creature has its own beauty, and I'm sure this critter is lovely in its own way, but things look a little hectic in this photo, even if the dude is smiling.
Of course, possums don't make for good pets, but there's still something undeniably pleasing about seeing one posing with a human — even if there's no way that this moment can last.
"Miss Chiyo."
We get accustomed to the standard cat patterns — solid color, solid color with mittens and underwear, calico, tabby, tortoiseshell, and tuxedo. These are the cats we tend to see the most of — but there are still some rarer patterns out there, often caused by minor genetic mutations.
We're not sure where Miss Chiyo got her gorgeous arctic camo coat from, but either way, she's certainly something to behold. That adorably innocent expression certainly helps as well.
"Fox Cub Riko."
The Redditor who posted this explained that this little fox, who they nicknamed Riko, lives in their garden in the United Kingdom. Fortunately, wildlife rescue has checked the cub out and he's in good shape, free to come and go as he pleases.
Foxes are canines, which makes them related to dogs — but when you see pics like this, it's easy to imagine them as a midway point between dogs and cats.
"My husband turned 'let’s just take the cat hiking and have a nice meal at home' years old today."
It takes a certain kind of temperament for a cat to be okay with being lugged around like this, but this gorgeous silver kitty seems like it's used to the routine at this point.
For the cats who can handle the uncertainty of going to new places, these trips would provide a great way for them to get some fresh air, smell some new smells, and experience nature — all without leaving the comfort of their backpack.
"Went to see capybaras for my birthday. This one laid her head in my lap for about 10 minutes."
Capybaras are adorably derpy looking animals, with their thick coats and big, lumpy frames making them look like gigantic hamsters. Needless to say, they're too unwieldy to be a good pet, but that doesn't mean that they don't get snuggly.
This 'bara has evidently made a new friend, as these snuggles persisted for about ten minutes. It's fascinating to see non-domesticated animals behaving in much the same way as our pampered house cats and dogs.
"How it started/how it’s going."
The Redditor who posted this included two photos of their cat, but the joke was that they're basically identical. While some cats have to overcome a rough early existence, others are born into the lap of luxury — and that's clearly what has happened here.
You can always tell when a cat is happy, mostly by its eyes. This cat is in full squint mode and seems totally content in its surroundings. Even its little face looks to be smiling.
"Meet the newest member of the family, Dutch!"
Dutch looks like a very good boy, with a charming expression and stylish red collar. He's clearly a dog that's going places.
Of course, if you've watched movies or followed California politics over the past few decades, you may recognize Dutch's human: Arnold Schwarzenegger, who posted this photo to Reddit. Of course, we're not here for the Governator. We're entirely here for Dutch. Still, it's cool to see Arnold.
"Every year this mama duck brings her babies to my house and I help her take care of them. This morning I opened my door to 13 new peeping fluff balls."
It's interesting how different species of waterfowl have dramatically different temperaments. Canada geese hiss, honk, menace, and basically always seem to be looking for an excuse to ruin your day. Ducks, on the other hand are more chill. Oddly enough, these two species coexist just fine.
If you ever doubted the chillness of ducks, check out this pic. Mama duck knows good people when she sees them, so she continually goes back anytime she has new ducklings.
"Husband said he was going to make a bed frame. I thought it was for our new mattress.... It was for the cat."
We spent hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to sleep comfortably, so it only makes sense that we make an effort to make our pets comfortable as well. This is especially true for cats, who basically sleep nonstop until it's time to eat.
Did this cat need a literal bed frame (complete with tiny bedside table) in order to sleep comfortably? Probably not. A folded-up blanket would have sufficed. But where's the fun in that?
"My sister made a sweater for Spaghetti...I think he loves it."
Snakes aren't for everyone, but this pic proves that even the squirmiest of pets can be downright adorable. This snake, Spaghetti (perfect name, right?) has a custom-made sweater to help warm up its cold blood.
While the pic is cute and all, I really need to see a video to understand how this works. Does the snake just squirm into the sweater, or does it have to be buttoned up somehow?
"Four-year-old went outside to play then came back to the front door with a new friend."
It seems like little kids can be a direct conduit to the mystical and weird sometimes, and this is evidenced by the fact that they sometimes do things like this.
Where did this kid find the deer? Why is the deer so trusting? What will the next move be for this kid's parents, who are in no position to care for a deer? We don't know the answers to these questions, but it's a cute pic either way.
"My son has loved my cat since the day he was born. She tolerates that love in a way I never thought possible."
The temperament of a cat can vary wildly, and introducing cats to young kids can be a litmus test of how calm your cat is. While lots of cats want nothing to do with the chaos of a toddler, others become de facto big siblings.
This quiet, contemplative photo exemplifies the relationship between a child and a cat. Both are clearly completely comfortable with the other. It's a wonderful thing to see.
"The decoy keyboard is working."
Cats love to sit on things that are placed on other things. Put a book on your bed and your cat will sit on it. Drop a piece of paper on the ground and your cat will sit on it. Create a workstation that you need to use to stay employed and your cat will sit on it.
This cat doesn't know it, and hopefully never will, but the keyboard it's sitting on is a fake decoy keyboard. Well played, human.
"Good boy got the photo 10/10."
"Bark in the Park" promotions have caught on at Major League Baseball games in recent years, as teams recognize that fans might want a few unique experiences sprinkled throughout a seemingly never-ending 162-game season.
There have been some adorable Bark in the Park pics taken over the years, and some hilarious ones as well. This one is clearly one of the best in either categories. It's hard for a dog not to be happy after being gifted a whole hot dog.
"Our cat is obsessed with blanket forts, so we made him this. He has wares, if you have coin."
Thanks to the video games of the Elder Scrolls universe, a new trope has been born in recent decades: That of cats being mystical traveling merchants who will sell you much-needed supplies — assuming you have the coin, of course.
It's a new direction for cats, but an interesting one. It also leads to some fantastic photo ops. This cat doesn't look quite smart enough to drive a hard bargain, but he's doing his best.
"Me and my boyfriend spent the whole day setting up an art gallery for our gerbil."
Quarantine was tough on everybody, but it did give us an opportunity to do some things we wouldn't have found the time to do otherwise. Of course, building an art gallery for your gerbil might not be the most productive use of your time, but it beats going stir-crazy.
Besides, the value of something like this comes not just in the memories, but in the pictures. These cute photos will live on forever as a reminder of the things we did in 2020.
"My landlord was replacing our sink and sent me this."
Cats always like to know what's going on around the house — and thanks to their athleticism and jumping ability, they're usually able to put themselves in an optimal position to observe these goings-on.
They also seem to appreciate when someone is hard at work. That doesn't mean that they'll help in any way, of course, but they'll certainly observe. In this sense, they serve also like a supervisor or foreman.
"When you get to bring your dog to work and she reminds you that you’re her favorite person."
It can be a tad chaotic when people bring their dogs into the office, especially when multiple dogs are milling around. The dogs can become overwhelmed, as it's a whole world of new scents, new people, and new dogs.
But amid the chaos, after you've let your dog off-leash to explore the cubicles and break room, you might lock eyes with your dog at a certain point. It's during these moments when you realize that you're truly special to your pup.
"Nervous cadet reporting for duty."
It's totally fine for this puppy to be so unnerved — after all, it's just a baby, and the process of becoming a police dog would be daunting for anyone.
Here's hoping he gets over his initial nervousness and grows into the role. Right now things are looking a little bit clingy — but fortunately no one seems bothered. In fact, it looks like a downright delightful situation.
"A shop owner modified his attic to accommodate his cats. Now he is under constant observation."
We all know that cats love to observe, often in a way that feels downright judgmental. Cats can observe individually of course, but they're just as good at keeping an eye on things with a partner.
There's something about adding a second cat to the mix that makes things feel more judgmental. While one loner was observing you before, now it feels like you're standing to be judged by an entire jury.
"My cat learned that the alarm sound means I wake up, and she snuggles on my chest right after. I've been setting my alarm 30 minutes early every day to give her more happy time."
We all know the story of Pavlov's dogs, which showed that dogs can be trained to associate certain stimuli with certain events. Anyone who's ever used a can opener in front of a cat will tell you that the same thing applies to felines.
Of course, it isn't just the sounds of mealtime that can prompt a cat to take action. Sometimes, it's the sound of an alarm clock that serves as a reminder that snuggle time will end soon.
"I'm a photographer and I captured these two, who are friends in my neighborhood."
The Redditor who posted this really didn't need to state that they were a photographer, because this pic is so professionally done that it looks like it came out of a photo studio.
It's hard to know what prompted the unlikely alliance between a tuxedo cat and a raccoon, but these two are evidently pretty good friends. Perhaps it was the mutual love of eating garbage, or simply a matter of game recognizing game.
"Met some friendly black sheep today. Ran right up to greet me."
Black sheep are associated with negativity — nobody wants to be the black sheep of their family, after all. But "black sheep" is just an expression, and there's nothing inherently wrong with these melanistic sheep.
In fact, they can be downright friendly. There's something truly magical about approaching a group of farm animals and seeing them take interest and come over.
"This action shot of a dog jumping in the water."
Was this supposed to be a compilation of cute animals? Yeah, technically it was — but perhaps we can bend the definition, or at least be flexible in how we interpret cuteness, because this is an all-time great dog photo.
Yes, for the record, this is a dog, not Slenderman. It's just vigorously shaking itself dry after a romp in the river. Day to day, it's probably a cute dog. But in this instant, it's nightmare fuel.
"My baby Stevie is blind, but can find an unattended dinner plate in .02 seconds 😂"
Because cats have such adept and finely-tuned senses, they can get by just fine, even without eyes, in the right environment. This cat is completely blind and eyeless, but is still able to live his best life.
A big part of living that best life evidently consists of stealing people's food off of the table. It's pretty impressive that Stevie is able to navigate around well enough to jump up on chairs and eat off the table.
"Found this little fella outside my work yesterday."
Black cats can look incredibly elegant under the right circumstances — but those circumstances don't usually include having a pair of extremely crossed-up eyes.
Still, this is a pretty cat — just look at those big ears and adorable white scarf. It might not be the most elegant kitty we've ever seen, but it's certainly captivating. And while the eyes might be a little bit funny at first, they're really more endearing than anything.
"Two little sisters."
We get pets to spend years with them, and most of these years are spent as full-grown adults. Their youth is incredibly short, consisting of just a few months, before they take on their adult form.
This makes the state of puppyhood (or kittenhood) all the more special. It doesn't last long, but while it does last, they look like absolute muppets. It's a short period of time, but a sweet one.
"I adopted Pepè (right) and went back for his brother. No black cat will be left behind on my watch!"
Black cats are often the last members of their litter to get adopted, likely for the simple reason that they blend into the background, and people's eyes tend to be drawn towards kittens with more eye-catching designs.
This is why it's all the more important to give these sweet black cats a home. Sure, they might not have a fun tabby pattern and essentially look like a void with eyes — but that doesn't mean that they don't make for great pets.
"My folks are close to retirement and decided to get not one, but two golden retriever puppies."
Golden retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds for a reason. They're sweet, gentle, loyal, and have a temperament that makes them suitable for literally anybody. They can also be energetic, and — we say this with love — not the most intelligent.
Either way, these folks are bound to have a fun retirement with these two golden pups bouncing around. It'll take some energy to corral them, but it's good to have an active retirement.
"My dachshund turned 15 today, so here she is in her quinceañera flower crown."
Dachshunds, or weiner dogs, are some of the more distinctive dogs out there. This photo of a dachshund is taken head-on, so it emphasizes her pretty face rather than that iconic wiener-like torso.
Pets can't understand the concept of birthdays (we don't think they can, at least), but it's still nice to celebrate them all the same. It's a way for us as humans to mark the passage of time while giving our beloved pets a special experience.
"My brother came over to watch sports and my boy got comfy."
Whether it comes out of a sense of ownership, anxiety, or just wanting a warm body to snuggle up against, some dogs have a way of snuggling that leaves no room for personal space.
It's a little harder to watch TV, and a lot harder to get off the couch, with a big dog laying on your chest. But at the same time, it's hard not to feel just a little bit flattered that the dog has chosen you.
"I got a cat for my dog after she got anxiety after an incident and they became instant soulmates."
It's an old trope that cats and dogs don't get along, and this trope essentially paints them as age-old enemies. While it's true that cats and dogs can get into disagreements and fights (same as any other animals), they can also form close bonds.
This tuxedo cat was the perfect partner for this poor anxious dog. You can tell just from this photo that the two are totally comfortable and secure around each other.
"This baby girl turns 25 today. Everyone tell Penny happy birthday!"
A cat living to be 25 years old is truly impressive, as this works out to about 116 years old in human years. This kitty might be a bit ancient, but seems to be doing just fine in her old age.
Of course, the oldest cat ever lived to be an incredibly 38 years old. That would make them 168 years old in human years, which is far longer than any human has ever lived.
"Echidna we rescued at work."
"This little guy got stuck in the bottom of a shallow mineshaft, we could just see his little spikes sticking out of the dirt," wrote the Redditor who posted this. "It took us about 30 mins to get him out because he could burrow faster than we could dig, but we managed to relocate him to a safer spot."
If you've ever played a Sonic the Hedgehog game and wondered what animal Knuckles is supposed to be, here you go.
"Our new cat is ridiculously photogenic."
We've seen plenty of derpy cats and plenty of elegant cats, so here's one that falls somewhere firmly in the middle. Judging by that posture and mischievous expression, this is a tuxedo cat who knows how to work those angles.
Capturing a cat in "smile" mode like this is tough to do. You basically need to wait for them to meow or yawn, and hope that the camera was able to do its thing in time.
"Mojo turns 20 in a few months — transformation to silver fox almost complete."
The Redditor who posted this showed some earlier pics of Mojo in which he was essentially jet black. Just like humans, pets can go grey as they age.
Unlike humans, fortunately, they don't seem to suffer from male pattern baldness, so this silver fox status is really the only change that will happen to their coats as they age. It's an intriguing process to see in action.
"A bunny suddenly appeared on my lawn (came back today and she let me pet her!)"
While rabbits make good pets, we're more likely to encounter them outdoors than inside somebody's house. They thrive in suburban environments and breed in vast numbers, so there are always plenty of them around.
This rabbit is a wild rabbit, but it looks and behaves much like a domesticated rabbit. Maybe it's descended from a pet rabbit, or maybe the person who posted this is just a bunny whisperer.
"Babysat baby Ozzie for my friend this past weekend. I didn’t want to give him back!"
This adorable kitty is a Scottish Fold, which is characterized by those trademark droopy ears (the condition is caused by a natural mutation). That explains the ears, but not the big, plaintive eyes.
It's easy to see why the poster was so smitten with this cat after babysitting him. There's something about that soulful expression that would be very easy to fall in love with.
"I was chosen by a baby bat this morning."
Anyone who's dealt with a bat infestation will tell you that there's nothing worse than being surprised by one of these winged critters inside your home. But when you get over the fear factor, they're surprisingly cute creatures.
When they're not diving erratically around your living room and you get a chance to study them close-up, their little faces are incredibly cute. In some circumstances, they look a lot like dogs, mice, or other mammals.
"The way my cat looks at me when he is comfy."
Cats are very committed to comfort, and will contort themselves into all sorts of odd shapes, seemingly defying gravity, in their quest to find the ultimate comfy spot.
This kitty is doing a classic cat move: Rolling onto its back, tucking its paws into the chest, and looking at its human with an "Aren't I cute?" expression. The answer to that question, in this situation and in all others, will always be, "Yes."
"A family of ducks has moved into our pool."
The Sopranos started with a depressed mob boss becoming captivated with a family of ducks that moved into his pool. That likely isn't quite the same as the backstory here, but it still speaks to how humans can find meaning in simply observing wildlife.
These ducks aren't pets, of course, and will presumably leave this pool for good eventually. But it still feels special to know that you, or at least your pool, played a role in their lives.
"I'm a therapist and a client brought in a puppy for me to hold during group."
This puppy might not be officially accredited as an emotional support animal, but seeing pics like this shows exactly why dogs make great emotional support animals — and how humans can find such comfort in these snuggles.
Simply holding a living, breathing creature who responds to your touch and voice is a way to calm and center ourselves, giving us something to focus our mental and physical attention on.
"We spent the entire day searching our apartment for our lost kitten. This is the smug face we saw before we went to bed."
All cats have at least some level of mischief in them, and unlike dogs, you can't really expect to train it out of them. All you can really do is adapt to their tomfoolery.
Sometimes, of course, this means freaking out because it seems like you've lost your cat, turning the house upside-down in an effort to find them, and then reaching the end of the day and realizing that you were essentially pranked by your pet.
"Not a creature was stirring, all through the house — except for this mouse living in our Christmas tree, apparently."
This pic is so professionally done, so cute, so idyllic, that you'd swear that this was a pet mouse. But no, this is just a house mouse, the same kind that would send most of us running out of the room if we spotted it.
Credit to the photographer for keeping it together, recognizing the situation, and snapping an all-time great photograph. Hopefully they humanely caught this mouse, let it outside, then thoroughly mouse-proofed their entire home.
"My aunty's cat can sleep anywhere, anytime."
Cats spend a lot of the day sleeping, so it makes sense that most cats have a number of go-to sleeping spots — maybe a sunny patch of carpet during the day, a cat tower in the evenings, and next to their human in bed at night.
Of course, cats are also highly adaptable and can make a comfortable sleeping spot out of nothing. This doesn't look that comfy, but the cat would probably disagree.
"Guapo is still afraid of his 3 siblings 😅 Swear, they love each other! 🥰🥰"
It can be tough to find a way for everybody to get along in a multi-pet household, especially when you're introducing new pets to a group that's already established. We're not sure whether Guapo or the cats came first, but there's clearly still some drama to be resolved here.
The dog is a smaller breed, making it about the same size as the cats. Sometimes that's a good thing as it places them on a level playing field — but other times, they'll be fighting like cats and dogs.
"Found a runt outside and my cat is helping take care of him."
Cats can seem like the most vicious, antagonistic creatures around — but when they have kittens, they become caring and devoted parents (even male cats, sometimes).
This even applies in some cases when a foster kitten is placed with an adult cat. Suddenly, all that cranky energy goes away and you see your kitty stepping up to care for a baby in need. Then, of course, the baby grows up and the foster parent can resume their grouchy ways.
"My son is three days old today, brought him home yesterday. Our dog Zuko has watched over him and hasn't let him out of his sight since."
Dogs can read body language and other cues from their humans, and this is especially true when people bring a new baby home. The dog intuitively knows that the baby is not just incredibly important, but also helpless and in need of constant care.
Not all dogs show this level of vigilance with a newborn, but plenty of them do. It's clear that this dog recognizes the baby as the newest member of the family pack.
"My daughter kept asking for a cat. The answer was ‘absolutely not.' I didn’t expect to have one adopt us. Her name is Luna."
This is really a tale as old as time, isn't it? Someone wants a cat, this wish is denied again and again, but somehow, it just winds up happening — and everybody is better off for it.
This story went like so many others. Not just with the initial desire for the cat, but also with the cat adopting its humans rather than the other way around. Luna looks like a great addition to the family.
"Emotional support kitten after knee surgery."
Animals can get depressed just like we can, and this is especially true when they're dealing with something that causes pain and affects their ability to function.
This dog was probably pretty bummed out by its recent knee surgery, so it was nice of its humans to get an emotional support kitten. Judging by this pic, it looks like things are going pretty well — and they'll get even better as the kitten grows up and the dog recovers.
